Pringle Challenge
In this project, we took a single Pringle and shipped it to Nicole's parents who live 600 miles away. When Nicole's parents received the package they shipped it back to us, which made a total of 1200 miles that our Pringle had to travel. It was very challenging because Pringles are so fragile and that there were not many materials that could surround the chip without breaking it. The requirements were that we could not use a Pringle container because it is made to hold the chip without breaking it. Most of the grading was based off the mass and volume of the package, and the other part of it was the condition of your chip.
Materials we used:
- Jar & Lid
- Balloon Strings
- Cotton Balls
- Cardboard box
The reason why we used these materials is because we just felt that it would be really safe. My group and I knew that Balloon Strings are very gentle and the Pringle could just sit on it. We put the Jar with the chip and strings into a box with cotton balls so that the jar would not move around and bang against the chip.
I was very surprised when the competition scores came out. Some of the scores were close to 1,000 and some of the scores were less than 1. The way we calculated was we took the intactness score (Score out of 10 of the condition of the chip) and divided it by our mass in kg multiplied times our volume in cm^3. So basically our intacness score was 5.1/.16*5180 and we got a competition score of .62. So we were one of the groups that was under 1.
If I could do this project again I would definitely make the package lighter because we didn't really pay attention to that and it took down our score a lot. I would also use a plastic jar instead of a glass jar because I think the glass is unsafe for the chip because it could bang against it.
