Your Internship Presentation of Learning
Put together your POL. You can choose any format you want ( prezi, PowerPoint, presentation board, info graphic, video, etc...) Combine Section 1 & 2 together into a lovely presentation.
I know my presentation slides look a little boring but I will have many documents, pictures, and words to go along with them.

January 26th, 2016: POL Section 2—Your ideas about life outside of high school. (Complete entry by 10 pm)
1. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why?
I appreciate the time I have in school that my teachers purposely give for us to have fun. Because although I have enjoyed my internship there has been a lot of office work which can get tiring at times. But the times I have been able to go out and see actual music therapy have all been amazing experiences. From the music therapy sessions I have really gained new appreciations for life because you see all these different disabilities that these people have and how they are still doing their best to enjoy life. It is truly moving to see these amazing people; employees and patients.
2. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why?
The selflessness in my coworkers is very admirable and amazing to watch. It is something that I think I have now but want to develop more as I get older. Helping people is a great skill to have but to donate your whole career to helping people is truly amazing and I don't know if I am that much of a selfless person.
3. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern?
After internship I can definitely see my self in a job around helping the disabled because it is very moving to see these people enjoying arts and music. So it has changed my view of my life after high school or sure because I never really considered working with the mentally disabled as a career option for me.
4. How might internship influence the direction of your life?
It influenced me because it changed my career path and let me know what I want to do when I'm older just a little bit more. But that little bit is very far for me because I never knew what I wanted to do. I feel that working with the mentally disabled could be a serious career path for me.
5. How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments?
It made me understand that in an office there is no messing around with work, you need to be the most efficient with the work that you're given so that your coworkers can be the most efficient with their work. Also it is good to not bother your coworkers for constant questions, I don't really ask too many questions to my teachers anyways so that wasn't hard for me. But again you don't want to be pestering someone while they're trying to finish some work. Pretty much in an office everyone depends on each other so finish your portion so that your coworkers can finish theirs.

Well everyone, this is the happy last week of internship!
POL Section 1—Your work as an intern
Reflect on the following list of questions to guide a thoughtful reflection about your internship experience and project(s). Be descriptive and display evidence(s) for your answers.
1. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
I've been able to see how a non-profit is run. I worked on any tasks that needed to be done in the office. I worked on everything from moving furniture to spreadsheets. Most of time has been working on reaching out to possible donors for Resounding Joy. They are a non-profit and 100 percent funded by donors so it is vital that they have contact with foundations so that they can explain their cause. I have also had the pleasure of seeing some real music therapy sessions. They were all great experiences to have and I am grateful that I had the chance to observe the sessions.
2. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?
Internship has also helped me with my time management and my focus skills. These skills are good to have in any environment whether that be at school or at work. It is always good to be focused and smart with time.
Internship will also help gear me into which occupation I would like to choose, so it will help me in college when I am looking for which majors to choose.
3. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site?
It was very meaningful to know what an office environment is like, because when I'm older it will help me decide what type of job I want. And after seeing some music therapy sessions it has really showed me that music therapy could be a serious job path for me. Now I know whatI want to do when I'm older just a little more.
4. How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product? Share out the process & be sure to upload evidence(s) of this work.
My project started by finding out that the college interns needed to give a presentation about music therapy to finish their internship and get a job. When my teacher Will came for a site visit I told him this and he suggested that I set them up with HTHI to do a presentation for my internship project. So I emailed Mike because I felt that music class would be the most appropriate outlet for this presentation to show the students what you can do with music. Below I will show emails between Mike and I setting up the presentation. Once the presentation is finished I will take a video or take pictures and post them.

I learned that I really like music therapy and working with people that have disabilities because it is a great feeling to see these people who have a hard time with life participating and having a great time with music. It is really amazing to see what is possible with music and to see these selfless people who help for a living.

Happy Friday! We can't believe Internship is just 1 week away from being done.
Internship is such a wonderful experience that practices what HTHI is all about - projects, presentation, media skills, communication, and more...
1) What other elements from your internship experience can teachers LOGICALLY replicate in our classrooms? And give applicable ideas that teachers can do.
2) What new skills and/or perspective are you going to bring into your student practice to improve your academic performance?
I think that teachers can take things that would never fly in an office environment out of the classroom. They should just tell people how it will be in a real environment, and how work isn't messing around. I'm going to be more focused in class now that I have gotten to do a lot of office work. It also helps with patience, and now I am confident that I can fix the printer if it jams.

Wondering what your fellow interns are doing? For today's post you are going to read and comment on 3 other interns' blogs ( located under blogroll tab). Your assignment is
1) post comments on each of the 3 blogs
2) on your blog - Write down the names of the internship blogs you read/commented AND write down any takeaways that you may have from reading other internship experiences.
Today I read 3 blogs by Alicia, Ben, and Angelina. Alicia is interning at a place called Brandetize, a digital marketing company located in Hillcrest. At this place she has been making videos, all the way from making a story board to shooting and editing the video. She seems to be having a great time and she is very grateful for her internship. Ben is interning at a place called GameSync where people can come in and play PC games on their computers, not many people have been coming in since they have been on break but Ben has been meeting a lot of the usual customers. Angelina has been interning at a place called La Loupe Vintage where she has been rearranging the store and seeing the behind the scenes of a clothing shop. From seeing how all my friends are doing I can tell that It is good that we all got internships that have to do with our passions.

9TH BLOG POST: Friday, Jan 15th, 2016/ / First Full Week
Jan. 15th, 2016: HAPPY FRIDAY!! Due at 10 pm today!
This is your first FULL week at your internship site. How different is it compared to school?
Compare and contrast the work week with the school week.
How are your responsibilities, work, interactions, and time different?
How might internship influence the direction of your life?
What can you bring from internship to who you are in school?
The differences between school and work are that at work people are actually depending on you to finish certain tasks so that they can move forward with their work. At school it's more on you, if you want to mess around in school your grades will show that and the consequences only affect you, but at work they affect your team. My responsibilities as of right now are taking care of the things that need to be finished like various spread sheets and really just the little things that need to be done for the organization. The work I do at school is not to help them out, it's mostly various projects that I create on my own. The interactions I have are actually very similar, they are mostly just checking in with my mentor, asking various questions about my tasks. In school I will do the same things about class work to my teachers. The time is the same, I stay for about 6 hours. Internship has shown me what working in an office is like which is very beneficial to my future for when I need to get a job. It will help me in my school for my worth ethic and concentration skills.

Please also describe your next steps. ** Remember to be descriptive with your project details. We want to be able to fully understand your project(s) by what you write in your blog.

So as of today I have been at internship for one week. I've been thinking of many different project ideas, I have narrowed it down to two possible projects. One of the ideas was to somehow show the differences between running a business and a non-profit. My second project idea was given to me by Will when he came for the site visit on monday. He suggested that I should set up a presentation with Mike to have some of the music therapists in training come and talk a little about what it is they do. The reason this would be beneficial for the music therapists in training is because in order to complete their internships they need to complete presentations about music therapy. I think I am leaning more towards the second more because music therapy is a very awesome outlet for people to go to, and not many people know about it.

( 1 extra day to make sure you take photos)
Describe the physical space you work in. Try to paint a picture so that we all can visualize what your surroundings and your day are like. Please also clearly indicate the days and hours you will be working at your site.
*In addition: Take 5 pictures of your
internship site and post them along with your description.
My Office Building has 5 rooms. One for the main boss (Barbara), One for the music therapists (Lindsay and Alex), One for my mentor (Jessica), and an intern office where 4 college students and I so work. Besides those rooms there is one main room, think of it like a living room. That room holds many instruments for the music therapists, and many other items that they sell (Including egg shakers, various drums, and kazoos). I took a few pictures from the first day, but I was very busy so I didn't get to take pictures today, but I will tomorrow. I work from Monday-Friday 9am-3pm.

You Made it till Friday! You have successfully accomplished 3 full days at internship.
In addition, journal freely about your First Friday at your internship.
( minimum requirement of 1 paragraph - share anything about your internship experience) ** remember you guys are 11th graders - a quality paragraph is what we are expecting to read
Remember, updating your blogs and having elaborate journal reflections will positively affect your internship grade. Blog posts that are not descriptive and incomplete will result in a deduction in grade warning.
Well today I tried to finish everything that I hadn't finished from the previous days. I didn't finish everything, because we had a drum circle for later that day so we had to clean up the mess we made from yesterday with the carpet cleaners. So I did move all the furniture back into the office and printed out some manuals for the guests coming in the evening. I did have a lot to do today and I actually didn't want to leave. I had a great day, and thank you to my mentor.

So right as I came in on Wednesday, my coworkers all had tasks for me to do. So for the first hour of my day I untangled a group of messy cords, organized them, and then put them in shelves. Then I had to take inventory which lasted until the end of the day (which I didn't finish). Since I didn't finish inventory on Wednesday, I had to continue it today. Once I was finished with inventory, the carpet cleaners came because we had a little leakage from the crazy storms from the past few days. I had to help take out all the furniture, then I continued working on my next task which was to alphabetize a binder full of thank you letters. Right now I've just been working in the office which to me is not boring, however I am looking forward to doing some more hands on stuff with music therapy. But over all I do like my internship, and my coworkers are very nice.

2ND BLOG POST: Tuesday, Jan 5th, 2016/ / Excitement
Well, tomorrow's the official FIRST BIG DAY of Internship. What are you most excited about your internship and why? And at the same time, what are you most nervous about and why?
I am very excited for tomorrow, I have been in contact with my mentor for all of break. She told me to be there by 10 am tomorrow and I am super eager to get working. I am excited about working in a professional environment because it will help me in the future when I need to get a real job. I am very nervous that there might be a task that I can't handle or that I will need help completing. I want to do my best so I am afraid of being a bad intern.

1ST BLOG POST: Monday, Dec 7th, 2015 // The Interview
So last Thursday, we had our first internship site visits and we asked our mentors some questions.
Name of Mentor: Jessica Blaisus
Name of Organization: Resounding Joy Inc.
What is a typical workday like?
A typical workday would consist of daily visits from people in need of music therapy. They would be in the music room with the therapist and receive their treatment. The interns would be in the intern room completing whatever task they were assigned whether that be printing out tabs for the therapists or organizing a playlist for them/other various tasks.
How is the organization structured?
Barbara Reuer: Executive Director and Founder
Jessica Blaisus: Director of Development
Paula Wanderer: Director of Operations
Aida Sanchez: Program Coordinator/Music Therapist
Mandy Miller, Rachel Gant, & Mikayla Beaulieu: Music Therapists
Tell us about your path in getting to where you are today; what is your educational history and work experience prior to working here?
Jessica Blaisus went to college to pursue performing arts. She attended Cleveland State University and then went on to Mary Baldwin College. She became an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, so it makes sense that she would want to join Resounding Joy in their mission o give joy to those in need.
Why did you choose to work here?
She really loved giving and helping people. She realized this when she joined the Association of Fundraising Professionals. When she moved to San Diego the opportunity to give joy opened up and she took the position of Director of Development.
What qualifications do employees need to be successful here and how are those qualifications acquired?
Music Therapists must have completed a bachelor's degree for music therapy, and each employee must have a college degree that deems them as qualified for their position.
What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge are important to be successful here?
Jessica believes that to work at resounding joy it is important to have a love for music, to be dedicated to helping people, and to love the work that you are doing.
What advice do you have about working here?
Jessica said that if I ever get the chance to watch a real music therapy session up close, that it is a truly remarkable and amazing experience.
