Blog Posts about Bee Project
WEEK 1: 9/21
This week I planned out my documentary, I planned out the many facts that I will use throughout the documentary. Mostly facts about worker bees and queen bees and stuff about beehives and bee colonies. I got my documentary file started in my computer and the story board will be my next step.
WEEK 2: 9/28
I finished the story board for my documentary, I know exactly what I need exactly where I need it. I filmed a bit of my intro, which consists of shots of my computer and some of my voice over has been finished. I'm having a slow start but I know that the documentary will be beautiful because I am taking my time (which I have). I also realized that building a beehive from scratch is very difficult, and it is easier to buy.
WEEK 3: 10/5
This week I went to Walmart in hopes to buy a beehive, but unfortunately they sold the last two that they carried the day before. This was a minor set back in my project but still a set back nonetheless. Now I have to find an alternative way to buy a beehive which is sort of difficult because not many people sell them. I did not work on my documentary this week.
WEEK 4: 10/12
Beehive problem solved! I ordered a beehive off of amazon because no other stores in my area held any. The beehive is supposed to arrive in one week to two weeks. I finalized the important experiment that I will try to focus on in my documentary. My experiment is basically seeing if bees can realize the difference between a fake flower and real flower (them being identical) given that they pollinate flowers everyday. I still don't really know where I will buy my bees.
WEEK 5: 10/19
Buying the bees is one of the most important aspect of this project but I have yet to do that or even really contact anyone which is very bad on my part. I am half way through this semester and I basically can't start the real meat of the project because I don't have any bees.
WEEK 6: 10/26
My beehive is here! My bee hive project is now half way done. I still have not any had progress with the bees but the beehive arriving was actually a huge relief for me because it sort of showed me that I can do it, and it also showed me that I have spent too much money to go back. I also want a good grade so I know I will get the bees but now at least I have the beehive.
WEEK 7: 11/2
I tried ordering bee's online but it is not possible because you need to get the queen first and it will not come in time. I'm pretty sure I will not be able to get bees. This will make my project fail but If I show my failures and struggles throughout my documentary I will be able to explain what went wrong.
WEEK 8: 11/9
This week because of my failures with getting bees, and finding out that at this point it would be impossible to start a new beehive, I decided to show my failures in my documentary by talking to experts. My friend Chloe's mom is an expert beekeeper and I decided to show her in my documentary and the process to better explain why this was a bad time to start a bee colony.
WEEK 9: 11/16
This week I set up a meeting with Chloe's mom; Cindy. She was very nice and we have a meeting for sometime next week. She said that she would tell me what she did to start her beehive, and what I can do in the future to do this project better. I'm going to use our talk in my documentary to show my struggles with this project.
WEEK 10: 11/23
This week I got to talk to my friend Chloe's mom. Her name is Cindy. She helped me a lot this week with telling me all the different ways to start a beehive. My beehive was a failure, but it is alright because I will still show my learning through my documentary. Now that I have some footage of Cindy, things are looking better for my documentary and my over all project.
WEEK 11: 11/30
Now my documentary is finished, and I am hoping that my documentary is good enough to make up for my failure in my experiment. I ended up having no bees because the process is a lot more difficult than I expected. I am hoping to still get a good grade on this project because I tried my best, and I documented my failure.
WEEK 12: 12/7
Now I'm finished with the documentary and I have the box all ready to go for my Thursday exhibition! I am very excited to show what I have been doing for my project.
